a Mega Floss

Note: Do not use a
20005 Ribbon. It draws
too much electricity
and will “pop” a
15 Amp circuit
breaker.
Shown above are the six different
types of Floss Bands now being
used on various Gold Medal
Cotton Candy machines. Make
sure you get the correct band
for your machine. Many
operators prefer to carry a
complete maintenance kit
(shown on page 40) including a
replacement floss band and
ribbons. In the old days, when
porcelain coated floss bands
were used, some of this glass-like
porcelain would chip off from
time to time and end up in the
floss. Today, patented, plasma –
coated Gold Medal floss bands
are created to last through tens
of thousands of dollars worth of
production. However you can
destroy them. Never try to “super
heat” the floss head while it’s on
the machine. The plasma coating
is designed to be melted once at
3000Þ F. Never let the heating
elements “super heat” or you will
destroy the floss band. Never put
a floss band in a “self-cleaning”
oven. Simply stated – never try to
“burn the carbon out of the
ribbon” while the ribbon-heating
element is still in the band – even
though it is off of the machine.
We’ve told you how to destroy
a Gold Medal lifetime band–they
may not last a lifetime. But you
should get years and years of
trouble-free service if you take
good care of this rather expensive
part.
A Safety Warning and Some
Good Advice

Some important thoughts on Floss Ribbon
replacement. The #20005 Ribbon shown
above will produce excellent candy floss
on every Whirlwind machine
manufactured-even as far back as 1949!
However, whenever you replace the
ribbon heating element in an older floss
machine, it is very important to remove all
traces of the insulator ring–especially the
early “asbestos” variety. Modern insulator
rings (found underneath the floss bands)
are made of a rubberized material. If they
crack, pieces can fly out of the spinning
Flosshead and create injury to your
operator or a customer. Therefore, make
sure you have the right information and
technical data whenever you replace Floss
Ribbons.
Cleaning Floss Ribbon.
During the normal operation of a Cotton
Candy machine, the machine is sometimes
operated with the heat set so high that
you either see smoke from sugar burning,
or you can smell sugar burning. This
means carbon is forming in the turns of
wire in the heating element. It will
eventually clog up all the openings and
production will stop completely. If this
occurs, it’s very important to let us service
your machine or have a qualified service
person replace the ribbons or “burn the
carbon out.” There is skill required to do
this–do not attempt this activity unless
you have been trained. You assume all risks
in the event of injury to yourself or your
employees.
